AMD to buy ATI

Advanced Micro Devices plans to acquire graphics chipmaker ATI Technologies for $5.4 billion, a move intended to increase AMD’s mobile-computing and consumer electronics capabilities, and help battle archrival Intel.

    Could be, but am I the only one who finds these ‘mergers’ disturbing? Monopolies aside, this could prove an interesting spectacle in the great (de)sign of things to come.

    I find it pretty scary, especially when it is done behind the scenes. We only know about it when the merge is about to be completed. I just wonder how this will affect the end-user. Does this mean a better integration between the CPU and the GPU? Better drivers maybe? Personally I would wait until things cool down a bit before I build my next PC.

    Personally, I’d wait until the wrinkles get ironed out of DDR2 before upgrading if you can help it. By that time, DX10 cards should be on shelves as well.

    I think you’re looking at another year or so.
